Guardian uses citizen media agency Citizenside for a unique perspective in coverage of the 2011 Tour de France.

The Tour de France 2011 page of the Guardian's website features a new slideshow dedicated to sharing the experience of being a spectator at the most watched cycling event in the world.

Citizenside, the global news community, powers this slideshow using its network of local eyewitnesses to provide an exclusive feed of spectator pictures from every stage of the Tour de France.

Geo-targetted campaigns are launched in anticipation of each stage by Citizenside's expert social newsgathering team, led by editor-in-chief Philip Trippenbach.

To date, the Guardian has displayed 645 exclusive spectator photos from Citizenside, averaging 38 photos per stage for the first 17 stages of the Tour de France.

“We're very excited to be providing our members with such a great opportunity to share their experiences of the Tour de France”, explains Philippe Checinski, co-founder of Citizenside. “It's not every day that locals from those remote towns get their own photos published on the 5th most visited news site in the world!”

Matt McAlister, Director of Digital Strategy at the Guardian, said; “Working with Citizenside has given us a chance to explore some new ways of partnering with other communities and platforms that share our approach to openness.”
